What is landfill leachate? Leachate is the liquid within a landfill that must be captured and disposed without harming the environment. The primary source of leachate is the rain that falls on the landfill surface and contacts refuse. The toxicity of the leachate depends upon the age and the type of refuse buried. Generally, leachate will contain both dissolved and suspended contaminants which can be harmful to human, animal, and aquatic life.
In association with other professionals, GNH Consulting designs and builds systems to remediate leachate to acceptable water quality guidelines. We prefer to employ environmentally sustainable methods such as wetlands and irrigation systems to achieve this.
Engineered wetlands use aeration and selected vegetation to treat leachate effluent. This natural and sustainable treatment method is enhanced by constructing aeration lagoons and canals which are configured to meet specific landfill criteria.
Irrigation systems treat leachate by spraying leachate over the completed (capped) portions of the landfill. Irrigated soils and vegetation can be minimal or engineered to meet water remediation guidelines. The irrigation system promotes nutrient removal by plants and reduces water volume through evapo-transpiration.
